Professionals, sole proprietor is a cunning black comedy about a family of professional criminals, made up of a father (a »retired« robber and murderer who is no longer active in the business due to a wooden leg, but maintains his paternal role as a background figure); a mother running a financial and household division, their son Jure, who has become the moving spirit of the family’s criminal exploits, and his partner Baby who is primarily concerned with gratifying Jure’s sexual needs with her opulent posterior.
The family decides to kidnap the wife of a wealthy businessman, Mr. Hochšteter, to blackmail his company and gain a big sum of money. As it turns out, Jure did not only kidnap a wrong woman, but also caused the death of a monk as collateral damage along the way. As soon as the kidnapped woman wakes up, it transpires that she is only a secretary at the tycoon’s company, which is why the family decides to dispose of her as she may potentially betray them. The plot thickens and a clever twist occurs.
A neighbour who constantly distracts the family by showing up unannounced reappears at the door and unravels a major lark: the kidnapped woman is … guess who?
Subsequently, the neighbour and the family join forces and set up a small business, called »Professionals, sole proprietor«, embarking on a joint venture to share the profit.
This entertaining conversation and situation comedy that was entered for the national Gracious Comedy Quill Award 2017 competition is characterized by hilarious repartees, absurd plot turns and black-humour situations. It was shortlisted among the top three best new plays. In addition to brilliant dialogues, this new Slovenian comedy abounds in humorous and smartly written acting roles.
Boris Kobal is an acclaimed Slovenian director, actor, theatre manager and a former long-time managing and artistic director of the Ljubljana City Theatre. His plays include many popular comedies written for the stage and television. His humour is insightful and light-hearted. In 1997, his Africa, or On Our Land won the national Days of Comedy Festival Award.
