Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002) was one of the most prominent and popular 20th century writers for children. She authored almost forty books for children and young readers, as well as dozens of picture books, screenplays for films, anthologies, books for adults and plays. She received many distinguished national and international literary award, such as the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, The Swedish Academy’s Grand Gold Medal, The Swedish Government Prize, and many honorary doctorates. Her most popular works include Pippi Longstocking (1945-48), Bill Bergson (1946), Karlsson-on-the-Roof (1955), Karlsson-on-the-Roof is Sneaking Around Again (1968) The Brothers Lionheart (1973), Ronia the Robber's Daughter (1981).

Lindgren successfully combined a realist style of writing with the world of rich fantasy. Her point of departure remained her memories of her own childhood years and her deep understanding of emotional needs of children in the world of adults, which is often predictable, dull and lacking imagination. She wrote her books to offer comfort to children and to entertain them. However, she hoped that her books would make a meaningful contribution towards a more responsible attitude to children. Throughout her life she remained a fierce advocate of prevention of any kind of adult violence to children.

Lindgren achieved worldwide fame soon after the publication of her novel for children, Pippi Longstocking. This freckled cheeky girl was born in 1941 when Lindgren's daughter Karin, aged seven, caught pneumonia. She asked her mum to tell her a story about Pippi Lonstocking, so Lindgren started making up stories about Pippi, a brave, inimitable and super strong little girl. It wasn't until 1944, however, that she finally got round to writing them down when she herself was rendered immobile due to an ankle injury. She presented the stories to her daughter for her 10th birthday. Initially the book was rejected for publication on the grounds of its rebelliousness and anti-authoritarianism of the plot. The author was even threatened that her work would be reported to the Youth Office. However, Lindgren's manuscript was accepted by another Swedish publisher, and became an instant success selling no less than one hundred thousand copies. To this date the book has been translated into 60 languages.

Undisputedly, Pippi Longstocking is one of the most popular books for children. Nine-year-old Pippi is unconventional, assertive, and has superhuman strength, being able to lift her horse one-handed without difficulty. She moves to Villa Villekulla which she shares with her monkey Mr. Nilsson and her horse. She lives by herself, since her buccaneering father is sailing high seas, while her mother is in heaven. Her neighbours’ children Tommy and Annika are truly fascinated by her, while the adults are disturbed by her unconventionality. They try to find a placement for Pippi in an orphanage. Naturally, Pippi has no intention to leave her home, and causes them many a headache in the process.

Pippi Longstock is a law unto herself. She defies authority and refuses to obey and follow adult rules blindly. She always demands explanations. No wonder she is very disturbing for the adults as she urges them to use common sense and reconsider their value system. She is a free spirit, reflecting children’s desires and needs. She has a great sense of justice and fair play, and requires the same from adults. Her uncompromising directness, strong mindedness, determination and positive thinking force the adults to change their attitude to children and take them seriously as their equals. The Pippi Longstocking story is a story of individuality, freedom and courage that lie hidden in every human being. It tells a story of the multi-coloured beauty of life provided we never forget what it is like to be a child. Pippi Longstocking is a personification of children’s desires and fantasies. With her pranks and antics Pippi Longstocking will always fascinate children, and urge the adults never to forget that they were children once as well.
