Gracious Comedy Quill Award of 2014
Contemporary Slovenian playwright Matjaž Zupančič is one of the most enterprising and successful authors in Slovenia. He has written more than ten plays (Devil Busters, Restlessness, Fly Killers, Vladimir, The Naked Pianist, The Corridor, A Dick in the Hand is Worth Two Thieves in the Bush, Couples at Stake, The Fall of Europe, Shocking Shopping, Workshopping Molière), for which he has won five Grum Awards (for Vladimir in 1998, for The Naked Pianist in 2001, for The Corridor in 2003, for The Class in 2006 and for Shocking Shopping in 2011). His plays have been performed or stage read in theatres in Slovenia, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Izrael, Switzerland, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia ... He has been invited to major European theatre festivals (Bonner Biennale, Festival d‘Avignon…) both as a director and a playwright in his own right. As a full-time professor he teaches theatre and radio directing at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana.
The basic premise of the comedy Workshopping Molière is a reference to a theatre-specific subject the dramatist Matjaž Zupančič is undoubtedly well-acquainted with. Simon Luzer, his partner Elma and friend Fridolin attempt to put on stage Molière's Tartuffe under the auspices of the Centre for creative writing devoid of the dramatic. Their invention revolves around the idea of performing Tartuffe exactly as it is written. This is an utterly untrendy approach for this day and age in which classical dramatic texts are merely starting points for the manipulation of directors’ nebulous ideas. Jerovšek, the producer, and his colleagues, Štrigruber and dr. Pita Lombardi, are appalled by such a pitiful concept as nowadays classical plays would need to be rewritten and staged in a non-dramatic manner aiming at the irrational and the timeless. Simon is a freelancer involved in off or off-off projects. He desperately needs the money he has received for staging Tartuffe. That is why he is forced to submit to the people he gets money from. However, during the creative process of the production and following the instructions of the Centre for creative writing devoid of the dramatic, Simon comes to terms with the decision that he would remain faithful to his own commitment.
The comedy Workshopping Molière was awarded the Gracious Comedy Quill Award in 2014, and the jury's rationale stated that the comedy Workshopping Molière wittily plays on the famous classical play by placing it in a contemporary world in which the dramatist Matjaž Zupančič critically ticks off the bluff and folly of some of the contemporary theatre procedures which are merely based on self-glorification.
Thanks to the humorous and honest dialogue, mixing of the classical genre and contemporary procedures as well as cleverly outlined dramatis personae, the comedy Workshopping Molière remains attractive also to wider audiences, not only theatre professionals, since it ridicules a vacant appearance devoid of content through the media of theatre which is nowadays a common feature in all areas of human existence.
