Gerhart Hauptmann (1862 –1946), a German dramatist and novelist, is counted among the most important representative of German literary naturalism. At the early age he ran into problems with his teachers and the better treatment of his higher class (noble) classmates. His dislike of school and illness which kept him from attending class, led to his having to repeat his first year. He contracted a life-threatening lung ailment that troubled him for the rest of his life. He studied sculpture, philosophy, literary history and drawing. Gradually he developed a strong interest in the theatre. In Berlin he joined the naturalist literary club Durch which included among others Karl Bleibtreu (co-founder of Berlin theatre Deutsche Bühne) and Wilhelm Bölsche (editor of naturalist magazine Freie Bühne named after the Freie Bühne theatre).
During this period he began to write. His first work in 1888 was a novella Signalman Thiel. His first plays Before Daybreak and The Weavers were staged by Otto Brahm, manager of the Freie Bühne.
In 1910 his first novel was published, The Fool in Christ: Emanuel Quint. This was followed by Atlantis in 1912 which was filmed in 1913.
Around the turn of the century, Hauptmann began to receive official recognition. Three times he was awarded the Austrian Franz Grillparzer Prize. He also received honorary doctorates from Worcester College at Oxford in 1905 and from the University of Leipzig in 1909. In 1912, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
His play Rose Bernd premiered in 1903 in Deutsches Theater in Berlin. In 1919 it was filmed in black-white, in 1957 a new film version was made in colour to be followed by a television version made in 1998.
Hauptmann found inspiration for his play Rose Bernd in a true story of a 25-year old baby-murderer Hedwig Otto. Rose is a young girl torn between her desires and other people’s expectations. She has been postponing her wedding to August Klein for three years. Her father desperately wants her to marry him and move to his house as this would solve his financial problems. Flamm, a married man, flirts with Rose and keeps making excuses for not forsaking his disabled bedridden wife. Rose falls in love with him. Streckmann, the machinist, comes along and insinuates that he knows very well what had been going on between her and Flamm. Rose becomes pregnant, which is why she decides to marry August after all, although he is not the father of her baby. A series of unfortunate events and evil acts by envious and resentful villagers bring Rose to kill her baby.
Rose Bernd tells a dramatic story of a young woman, trapped within traditional and constraining surroundings. Her fall from grace is caused by her unconventional and socially unaccepted deeds. It is a moving portrayal of a ruin of a young woman who wants more from life than her constrained surroundings can offer her.
